We review the dark Metroidvania Elderand .
I love the incorrectly named “ Metroidvania ” literary genre . But ever sinceDark Souls , many of the musical genre ’s entry have need to ape the FromSoftware serial publication , whether stylistically or automatically . Elderanddoes a little second of both , but mostly the former . Thisisn’taSouls - like , though . It ’s an admirableMetroid - comparable that does n’t last too long and is n’t especially original , but the game design and control are respectable enough that it ’s not much of a big deal . It does n’t do much differently than many other games , and unlocking the terminal boss requires some of that vagueDark Soulsstuff . But at least it is n’t aSouls - same .
Elderandstarts by letting you break up from one of three character heads and their hair color . You play as , uh , some guy who ’s special and destined to remove a groovy iniquity from the land or something . I did n’t care about the tale and I ca n’t conceive of you will , either . You ’ll find note full of lore to scan while meet , but it did n’t take me long to stop pay care . All you take to know is that there ’s a guy named Amon who lord over some malevolent mass who want to remake the world in an malefic way and it ’s up to you to stop them . Or become the fresh head evil guy , or something .

The game ’s general aesthetics are like every other over - serious Metroidvania that ’s heavy inhale byDark Souls . The pixel artwork is decent enough but also looks kind of generic . There ’s just not much that ’s memorable about the manner the game face its characters and world .
Reloaded
Elderanddoesnottake any experience away when you die . alternatively , you have to reload your last save . Killing enemies grant you experience that levels you up once it strive a certain doorstep . You then get a fictitious character stop that you could put into a few stats that dictate how you play the secret plan . Strength scales with heavy arm , Dex scales with wakeful ones , and Magic scale with wizardly weapons . you’re able to also put point into HP if you want . There are a variety of potion and you ’ll find new weapons and gear in chests and rarely from defeated foe . attack thankfully does n’t habituate stamina , but hedge and blocking do .
I put my dot into metier . Heavy weapons lease you equip a shield that blocks any frontal hurt at the toll of stamina . If you equip daggers , the block clitoris or else have you hit a few invulnerabity frames , which is a fun way to play the game if you wish time those attacks . And stamina let you promptly hedge forward or backward . As unimaginative as much of this is , the command are kind of awful . They ’re very snappy , runny , and responsive . However , the scrap in general does n’t have much depth . It just get the job done .
The exploration and level design are whereElderandshines . The map is n’t all that prominent , but the environment are nicely focused and varied . The most important thing for a Metroidvania is how enjoyable the geographic expedition is , after all , and I was kept glued to this biz for its duration . You get a few bog - standard ability that up your mobility . Double saltation , aura flair , get by hook , you know the drill . A set of the opposition designs are pretty cool , though . One of the map sections is an awesomeCastlevaniahomage , perfect with a staircase leading to the fully grown bad .

Amazin’ Laser
There are multiple endings to break which will permit you experience a few boss battles that you would n’t get to see if you go for the obvious close . The boss battles can be more or less ambitious , but you could spam healing potions if you desire . The obvious big bad is the only hardish boss fight . Mostly , that ’s because he ’s kind of cheap since he can round you from offscreen and does an enormous amount of damage . One boss engagement is a very obviousSymphony of the Nightcallback that had me smirking . Elderand‘s trouble itself is honestly correct where it want to be : it ’s gainsay enough that you wo n’t relax too much , but you wo n’t get drill either .
Elderandis a secret plan that does n’t really essay to do anything different from its peers , but it ’s fun to represent and satisfying to explore due to the simple-minded fact of how well contrive and paced it is . My file enjoin I got 99.70 % completion at about five hours of playtime , so it does n’t last that long . But my Steam time count says it took me a good deal longer , so there ’s enough meat to chew through . Plus I ’ll take a shorter game that ’s just as long as it needs to be over one that does n’t have a go at it when to turn back . I care it had more of its own identity , but it does everything well enough that it ’s gentle to advocate to Metroidvania fans .
