I ’m not the biggest transonic devotee . The blue blur has never really find quite right to me ; however , Sonic champion is a fresh take on the 2D Sonic game we remember from our youth . During Summer Game Fest I went deal - on with the freshly announced form of address and represent two stages . I walked away cheerily surprised by the blend of old way with young art and ways to interact .

Sonic Superstars allows you to bet as Sonic , Tails , Knuckles , and Amy as they assay to thwart Dr. Eggman and Fang the Sniper AKA Nack The Weasel . While the demo did not go into any story details , both of these antagonists register up to try and annoy our pet grim fuzz as he ’s try his god damn best to get to the end of these death lying in wait levels .
maven thrive on its new Chaos Emerald mechanic provide players to use new abilities like surfing up a waterfall in trend or sending a clon armour to clear out enemies on the screen door .
Spin elan as Sonic , glide as Knuckles , and even fly as Tails through reimagined and new levels sport all of that 2D Soinc goodness y’ all love so much .
During my demonstration I hear other characters like Tails and Amy completing labor or just cool in the background of stage . It made it sense like the team was all complete delegation together and working as a squad , as counterbalance to just one of them doing a chore and then reverberate .
Each stage culminating in a boss conflict . The two I saw featured a Graeco-Roman Dr. Eggman automaton contraption that was split in two phases , but the second boss in the jungle was the standout . Having to dodge home robot arms and build platforms to use the automaton on arms against was a refreshing change of pace from the simplicity of bebop an opposition on their silly small head teacher .
As with most preview builds , the game had some small form drop and retardation , but nothing that really impacted the speed of which Superstars moves at . The Jungle level specifically had me grinding on interwoven vines , rise from plants to thrust myself upwards to new summit , and even collecting glowing butterfly to perch up sorry areas .

As with classical 2D transonic games , there are multiple routes through levels and you ’ll often miss most of what you ’re looking at on your first go through . replay the stagecoach as each of the unlike characters changes how you interact with the level , and the path you ’ll take to the end .
Some of the control can feel a mo floaty at times , and I had trouble making some easy jumps . This was mitigate by using Knuckles glide , but the platforming does n’t always feel crisp and can sometimes kill your momentum .
After Sonic Mania , sports fan have been clamor for a new 2D Sonic secret plan , and it ’s nice to see Arzest heading up the campaign . Who knows , mayhap I ’ll become a transonic buff after all .
