There are twenty - one potential choices for your background in Starfield , and they melt down the gamut of potential careers and skills . Pick the chef , and you ’ll already have a full point in the Gastronomy skill chart , which will make food more effective when eaten . Pick Diplomat and you ’ll have a higher chance of follow in a Persuasion hinderance .
But what is “ FILE NOT FOUND ” , at the bottom of the tilt ?
The File Not Found option gives you one point in the skill Wellness , Ballistics , and Piloting . These skills are the base of any playthrough , as you ’ll be doing a lot of track , gunning , and take flight . And the vague implication of the category is that you ’re maybe a smuggler , soldier , operative , or someone else who ’s had their data wipe from all servers .

Beyond points in these skills , your background offers you the hazard to interject with some unique dialog from time to metre . These conversation choices are usually positively charged - neutral and occur very rarely . In my first playthrough as Diplomat , I had the option to apply that background signal three or four prison term .
I ’ve yet to see the option rebel for File Not Found . But that does n’t signify there is n’t more to the family baked into the game . Starfield is monumental , and the potential for side quest and dialogue pick is huge .
That being said , it ’s a good background to cull if you want point in some skilful , foundational acquisition . But observe , you ’ll be able to freely put your attainment points in these skills later .
