Has the studio hit the home run with their contribution to the retro repulsion music genre ?
With the spooky time of year upon us , it ’s only in good order that we dip our teeth into the neck of the later horror biz . I have been trying my hand at the new , retro - inspired revulsion puzzle game from Spiral Bound Interactive : You Will Die Here Tonight .
This top - down puzzler incorporates the golden years of horror games into its pre - rendered environment and character models . This is merge with a somewhat more modern — and yet still rather dated - looking — 3D shooting minigame . You Will kick the bucket Here Tonight expects the repeat complete death of your squad . However , with every playthrough , the game becomes soft .

Try and try again
You Will fail Here Tonight basically gives you six life to play with as you make your agency through the haunted mansion . Each character can croak only once before a new one has to be selected , and advancement is continued . Items pick up , such as weapons and tool , hold over to the next character , as does progress through the many locked doors and transition .
However , once all six characters have died , it ’s back to the beginning to consort through each of the puzzles and collect each of the items again . The only matter that carries over are weapons and upgrades .
The biz expects you to die . It also carry you to get through all of your lives at least a few meter . Each time you have to reset in You Will Die Here Tonight , you will be faced with the same routes to progress through the taken up sign of the zodiac .

Micro replays
On the humble weighing machine , as in when a single fiber go , and it ’s prison term to make your way back to your late progress , it is n’t so bad . Along the fashion , it is possible to open cutoff and make things easy for the next character .
This loop is enjoyable and nominate the black eye of turn a loss one of the characters not all that bad . It ’s a necessary wickedness and even gives the game slightly Soulslike elements . A lot of the time , the characters will be kill by something unexpected that has no warning and is completely ineluctable . This just entail the next character needs to try something new . Forewarned is forearmed .
Making the same error twice , or running down clip on contagion , is all down to me making the misapprehension . So , make my agency back to the previous position , although frustrating , is just a lesson learned .

However , this is where one of my major intestinal colic with the secret plan comes in . I am no stranger to a game that punishes me with a full reset every time I make enough mistakes . Rogue - likes / lites are some of my favorite games , and I still take great pleasure in the savagely thwarting gameplay iteration .
Usually , with a repetitive gameplay loop , the actual action of the game is tight - pace , quick , and rewarding . This is not the case with You Will Die Here Tonight . Once you have lost all six characters , it is straight back to the beginning with none of the tools , shortcuts , or foeman overcome . I simply had to start sweet and do the same previous mystifier again .
The puzzles offered nothing unlike or any interesting new challenges . It just felt like I was move through the motions to get back to where I was before . On my first playthrough , I was capable to get quite far through the game before cash in one’s chips . On reset , I had to completely start again , running through the same quotidian corridor , shooting the same enemies , and completing the same puzzles . The penalization for pop off was n’t a challenge , it was tedium , and it did n’t make me need to keep loading back up .

With a smash hit like Hades , even when you make it geographical mile and miles through the closed chain of Hell only to pop off at the last hurdle , there is a reinforcement of some variety . There is always something to keep the plot interesting — or at least make your bestial drive worth it . Even the dialog and character develop around Zagreus . You Will Die Here Tonight does n’t create enough of their loop to make it one that makes me palpate that “ one more plot ” draw it needs .
A retro throwback
You Will Die Here Tonight opts for a removed third - person view , callingback to the horror game of previous . It does n’t quite have the claustrophobic tactile property of the unsex camera of Resident Evil 2 , but it still adds a spooky component to the whole thing .
Thankfully , You Will Die Here Tonight does n’t expect you to perform accurate headshots against the various snake god enemies from this perspective . The biz switches you into a set minigame as soon as you enter armed combat . The computer graphic meliorate slightly , first - person musical mode is activated , and it do clicking heads so much easier .
The plot depend great . The inspiration from the early PlayStation 1 era of gaming is open , and I ’ll allow in , it made me a little nostalgic . The fix sets have been nicely put together , and the studio ’s use of lighting really adds some atm to the surround .

Retro in more than just appearance
woefully , the retro feel extends beyond just the surface . There are a number of noticeable bugs in the game , some that just seem like missed vivification and others that break the game .
A number of animations that are present for some reference just are n’t there for others . This is a minor gripe and can be forgiven for the studio ’s first game . Not everything is going to be get in playtesting .
However , one trouble I take on numerous times was with sure foeman swarming the characters . In some situations , there are enemies that are able to sprint , exit the aloofness between me and them in second . This means that if there is more than one of them , they snare me in an attack loop I could n’t escape from . There was no hazard for survival of the fittest , and it became incredibly frustrating .

what is more , the first - someone minigame used for combat becomes outstandingly samey very rapidly . It can be forefend by simply running around most foe , but not every time . The minigame is always pretty much the same . dissimilar enemy models will be used , and each has their own attack pattern , but at the core , it is a duck’s egg hunting . I did n’t find out them enjoyable after the thirtieth fourth dimension , especially when they became so buggy .
Variety is the spice of life
Each of the six characters in the game has a different personality and set of skill . These add up into gaming somewhat as the secret plan get along . Talking to each of the various people in the office before the game begins will reveal more about them , giving clues as to how they can help and interact with the spooky haunted mansion .
The team for You Will conk out Here Tonight has done a great business of produce the role not only individual but fun to toy with . As I repeatedly killed and replay each of them , I found myself chuckling at how they independently interacted with the surround . The various personalities each have unique responses to what ’s go on , from morbidly fascinated to clearly , uncurably mortify .
Along with their personality follow skill solidifying . Each of the characters can make for something to the mesa , be it weapon upgrading or wellness kit building . pay aid to these cues and hints give me a much better intellect of just what order to play each of the characters . I enjoyed the moments I got it just right or figured out the required character of the fictitious character ’ puzzles .

A puzzler at heart
Of course , the game has the first - mortal shooter element included , but the real core of it all is the puzzling . Many little challenges , subtle clue , and riddles are hidden around the function . Get some of them wrong , and it could be fatal .
I enjoyed these a deal and believe they are by far the strongest element of the plot . It was immensely hearty to register a riddle , commend back to an early part of the game , and connect the pane . They are never so knockout that you will need to resort to Googling unless you ’re incredibly raring . All the elements are always there , provided you take the time to really delve into the plot and its environs .
I would suggest screenshotting clues and puzzler to save having to run back and forth between room , though . They are not always right beside each other , and have the various poems and clues on hand make things a batch easier .
From the very beginning of the game , I was finding puzzles and drop ages look for the various cue . However , You Will pall Here Tonight is n’t afraid of a good throwback , and some of the first puzzle you find ca n’t be unlocked until much later . I get my head filling with numbers , locations , and hint as I lento made my way around the mansion . It gave me real Cluedo vibraharp , and each fresh puzzle work and reward gained made me feel like a A-one sleuth .
Hardly horrific
The game surely has the figure need to be considered a horror biz , but I would n’t really key it as “ horrific . ” It ’s less the want of gore and jump scares and more to do with the lack of suspense .
The moans and moan are all there from the zombie spirit , and their example are very sorcerous . But , the pacing and suspense are missing from the gameplay . Even when the game attempt to put together a spooky set opus with flashing , lightning - lit room and glance of horrific zombi , it only comes across as rather kitsch . I appreciate what the squad has done , and the recall to game of the golden eld of PlayStation 1 are for sure there , but if you ’re looking for something you wo n’t play with the lights off , this for sure is n’t it . As I said before , this biz is a puzzler through and through . The repulsion elements just give it a setting and theme rather than the creeping heebie - jeebies .
Is the House of Horrors worth the cost of entry?
If you do n’t mind the repetitive gameplay loop and require a quick , slightly flighty puzzle game , then I would recommend get down a transcript of You Will Die Here Tonight . For the first production from the indie company , this plot shows a mess of hope for their succeeding attempt .
You Will Die Here Tonight has play and unique characters that I enjoyed getting to know during my time with them . With a little more employment , a somewhat enceinte team , and a better budget , I think Spiral Bound Interactive could put together something rather bully .
The puzzle side of the game , although nothing novel , really made me enjoy the time I spent digging through the various points of interest in the preoccupied mansion . Each discovery , unlock , and cue I pick up made me feel like I had make it . The satisfaction from piecing thing together was rewarding . And this was what observe me get back , even after a full squad wipe .
However , the pacing is all off . Constantly sustain to slug back through tunnels and already solved clues was n’t fun at all . It became long-winded very cursorily , and I finger that the game could have streamlined the loop much well than it has .
It also did n’t serve the gumption of tedium that the combat mechanic , when it was n’t broken , was just a act softened .
Again , as I mentioned , for a first plot , You Will Die Here Tonight has real potential , but there are certain elements that do n’t make me want to come back and playact yet another cringle . I feel they just missed the scar on a secret plan that expects the player to invest a peck of time in replaying the same levels over and over again .
